One quick internet search and you’ll see that the heart of the debate for years has been which body of water reigns supreme in the smallmouth fishing world: is it Simcoe, or is it Erie? And to be honest with you, that’s really the driving force behind the summer series. I wanted to see for myself which was the top dog. Continue reading Smallmouth Smackdown Part V: The Beast, Lake Simcoe

If there’s one thing that’s true about smallmouth, it’s that they LOVE current. While many metropolitan areas might not be located near some of the powerhouse smallmouth factories you hear about all the time like Erie, Ontario, Pickwick, or St. Claire, most of them are near some sort of tributary/river system that hold big smallmouth. These fish might not match up in size to their cousins in the Great Lakes, but battling these fish in heavy current will demand focus and determination. Hooking a 4 pounder in the Susquehanna River is no exception. Hold on tight, and enjoy the ride!

A couple years ago I wrote an article that included a tip from a friend of mine about using a Carolina Rig to target deep smallies in summer. What I’ve found since then is that are a variety of presentations you can use to catch big smallmouth with a Carolina Rig, and the fall is no exception. When you think of fall fishing you think reaction baits, fish gorging themselves and generally being rather easy to catch. But sometimes fishing can be really tough, and that’s when these presentations can be really key to landing those GIANT smallmouth bass that people dream about! Continue reading Why you should Carolina Rig for Giant Smallies!
This has been one of the best years of my career, and with Fall fast approaching I plan to continue the momentum I have had going thus far right through to the end of the year. This is by far my favorite season because the fish get real aggressive, and it suits my style of fishing very well. The key to the big fish is that they want to eat one BIG meal, and they don’t want to work hard to get it. With that said, here are some tips that will help you decide where to target those fish, and details on what baits to throw, how to throw them, and when, so that you too can have the kind of dream season that people live for! Continue reading 5 Tips for Giant Fall Bass!

By now most people have heard about how beautiful the Finger Lakes region of New York State is. The Cayuga and Seneca wine trails are spectacular, and the fall foliage can deliver some of the best countryside views you’ll ever experience. But what you may not have heard about is just how good the fishing has gotten at the largest of them, Cayuga Lake. Typically Cayuga is a known destination for trout anglers, but in the past two years this massive body of water has produced some giant largemouth bass. If you don’t know what to look for, unlocking it can be a daunting task for sure. But I’m going to show you what you need, where to go, how to present your baits, and even where to stay while you’re there, so that you’ll have an absolutely magical experience.
